It is now understood that prolonged stress is a major factor in health issues today. It is well accepted by doctors that stress leads to cardio-vascular disease, immune systems diseases and even cancer. Trying to escape the impact of stress is difficult these days. Every day we awake to societal, personal, political and economic pressures that cause stress.

Can you guess what orchids and stress have to do with each other? This is the first of a series of videos designed to take people on a tour of Santa Barbara, California, and teach mindfullness.

Mindfulness exercises are a form of easy meditation that uses focal points in our environment to calm our minds. By focusing on our senses, we replace our stressful thoughts with the current experience.

What’s better than an orchid show to teach us to focus on our senses?! From the moment you enter the room, you are visually and aromatically hit in the face. By focusing on the sensory experience, you learn to release stress.

The Orchid Society of Santa Barbara (OSSB) hosts an annual orchid show at the Museum of Natural History. The California Central Coast has a number of orchid societies showing here. Orchids grown by enthusiasts and by professionals are on display for judging by the experts.

The climate in Santa Barbara brings commercial orchid growers here who also become members of the society. Several members are internationally famous as orchid growers and experts.

The climate in Santa Barbara is particularly suited for growing Laelia Anceps, a fushia-colored orchid. They cover the stage with color and beauty. The show includes a multitude of orchid types, Dendrobium, Masdevallia, Phalaenopsis, Cymbidiums, Cattleya and Paphio Pedilum (Lady Slippers) to name a few. There are miniature orchids as small as the head of a pin but completely perfect. What wonderful flowers.

The smell of different types of orchids is as different as their appearance. Interestingly, their aroma will be strong at various times of the day. Some smell in the morning or during the day, and some at night. Orchid aromas are as differemt as their appearance, some beautiful, some surprisingly awful. Their scent, no matter what it is, attracts specific pollinator.Just imagine what pollinator would like chocolate!
