How Do Binaural Beats Help With Meditation?

September 30th, 2009

The use of Binaural Beats during meditation could help you to get into a deeper meditative state faster. Binaural Beats occur when one hears two different frequencies in each ear. For example, if you were to hear 300 Hz in your right ear and 320 Hz in your left ear, your brain “hears” 20 Hz (320 Hz – 300 Hz = 20 Hz). This only happens if the difference is 100 Hz or less. By using Binaural Beats you can increase your brain wave activity at a specific range. This is called entrainment.
The four brainwave depths that can be manipulated using Binaural Beats are beta, alpha, theta and delta. Beta brainwaves increase concentration and active thinking. The brain hears beta frequencies at 13 – 40 Hz. Alpha brainwaves increase relaxation and drowsiness at 7 – 13 Hz. The brain is in alpha state when you are doing light meditation, or are day dreaming. Theta brainwaves are seen during REM sleep, while you are dreaming, and during meditation. Delta brainwaves are associated with the deepest sleep, and out of body experiences. They are found at. 5 – 4 Hz.
The best way to use Binaural Beats in your meditation process is to use a few frequencies from each of the 4 stages. Starting at beta and work through to delta. This will help the brain progress deeper and deeper, in stages, and is usually the most successful method.
The internet is a great resource for finding and downloading free binaural Beats. Alternately, you can purchase some great meditation CD’s that incorporate the use of Binaural Beats.
Because Binaural Beats work by delivering a different frequency to each ear, you can not simply listen to them through regular speakers. You must use headphones in order for entrainment to occur. Studies have also shown that for people that have a history of seizures, Binaural Beats can increase their seizure activity. Therefore the use of them is not recommended for those individuals. It is also not recommended to use them on children, as they are more susceptible to seizures than adults.
In my experience, the use of Binaural Beats has greatly helped me go deeper in my mediation routine. I also find that listening to theta and delta frequencies while I sleep really helps me to rest better and can result in some really vivid dreams. Alpha frequencies can be very beneficial when you need to brainstorm, or need help with creativity. All in all, the use of listening to Binaural Beats can help you to meditate more deeply, and since it is deemed safe and non addictive there is really no reason not to give it a shot.
